At the Trade Union Congress (TUC) March on the 20th October members of the SHIFT campaign will be joining people from over 20 other organisations to form a ‘Climate Block’; not just ‘For a Future that Works’, but also ‘For a Future that Doesn’t Cost the Earth’.
Many people from different environmental campaigns will join the TUC march on 20 October to be part of a huge popular challenge to austerity and the misery and hopelessness it is creating. We will march together to raise the crucial question of tackling climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of A Future That Works. Dealing with these issues together is possible, necessary and desirable. The climate is changing dramatically, and we are already seeing huge impacts on food prices and energy costs.
We don’t have to choose between the climate and the economy. The climate crisis and the economic crisis have the same root causes, in an economy rigged in favour of the richest 1%. More and more people are calling for investment in jobs which reduce emissions – for example, in renewable energy, public transport, and insulating our homes, which would make a vital start in tackling both climate change and unemployment. We also need to talk about what kind of work we need for a cleaner, fairer future.
We will be marching for a SHIFT in policy to reduce carbon emissions and provide the millions of decent sustainable jobs we need. We would like you to join us in central London outside St Paul’s cathedral at 11am before the march, for a short event including talks and performances. Speakers have been nominated by each organisation and will feature the Alliance’s George Barda. We will have a banner there and will then walk the short distance to Blackfriars Bridge to join the main march which is hoped to attract hundreds of thousands of people that see that current policy is not working.
To gain attention at the March we’d love you to:
- Print out the leaflet to hand out before the day (#SHIFT Download Here)
- Hand out cards that we have produced (meet at 10:45am in front of St Paul’s to collect the post cards)
- Email/ Facebook/Tweet other with inspiration before the event to encourage them to join #SHIFT
If you cannot join the climate block, and many of us will be staying with our own delegations, let us know and we will deliver or post some of our cards to you, for you to distribute.
It would be great if you can join us. Please show your support for the event by attending on facebook.
Even if you can’t make it yourself, please ‘like’ us on Facebook, and sign-up to SHIFT online if you haven’t already so you can join the discussion
